Just do it.

Just do it.
It’s so easy.
Floss every day
It is impossible to reach the tight spaces between your teeth and under the gumline with a toothbrush. That’s why Bachmann Orthodontics emphasise the importance of flossing every day, especially when you have braces or fixed retainers. We also advise that the best time to floss your teeth is before bedtime.

Did you know?

It is essential to wear your plastic retainer after your braces come off.
Why do I have to wear a retainer after successful orthodontic treatment?
Retainers are designed to hold teeth in place after your braces are removed. They are usually made of wire, plastic or a combination of both.
Braces straighten teeth by applying pressure. Like a tree bending in the breeze, they usually want to return to their original position once the pressure is gone — especially with young patients who are still growing. Retainers increase muscle memory and keep teeth in place.
Retainers ensure that the results, where so much effort has been involved, are maintained over time.
Once your braces are removed, please wear a retainer to keep your beautiful Bachmannsmile.

Smile News 8-Charcoal Toothpaste

Charcoal Toothpaste doesn’t make the teeth black or white.
Social media is full of advertisements and endorsements for charcoal toothpaste: the latest tooth-whitening miracle product! You can barely open Instagram or read a Buzzfeed list without seeing someone recommend the wonders of charcoal for your face and teeth. Some even use it as a rinse for your hair!
The American Dental Association has not found any evidence that charcoal toothpaste is safe or effective, and it may actually harm the teeth and gums. Charcoal toothpaste is advertised as a whitening agent that can remove particles from the teeth, but this is a misleading claim.

Cavities are caused by a germ.

A germ causes cavities. It can be spread while kissing & sharing food. Tooth actually decay results when bacteria in your mouth feed on food debris (starchy, sticky foods are a primary culprit) and produce acid as a byproduct. This mix of food, acid, saliva, and germs clings to your teeth as a filmy substance called plaque.

Plaque can erode teeth enamel and cause cavities to form. No matter what you eat, cavities won’t develop without the help of such bacteria. These germs can spread from mouth to mouth via shared food and utensils, sneezing, kissing, …

Please send us your best genuine smile.

Smiling is a universal sign of happiness.

You can show it to all your friends without wearing a mask. Just send a picture with your awesome Bachmannsmile.

The Link Between Smiling and Happiness

Smiling is a universal sign of happiness. No matter what country you go to or what culture you take in, smiling is a sign of joy and acceptance. The main reason for that is because studies have shown that when a person is smiling, it affects specific muscles that can make that person feel happy. In addition, when you use these particular muscles, your brain will release endorphins, which are brain chemicals that will induce feelings of pleasure and euphoria. So smiling indeed does have the ability to make you happier – even if you have to force yourself into doing so!

How to make JUICY Pesto Pasta with pesto sauce

Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup+ pesto
  • 300 – 350 g / 10 – 12 oz pasta of choice
  • 2 tsp salt
  • 3/4 cup pasta cooking water
  • Parmesan, for serving

Instructions

1) Bring a large pot of water to the boil with the salt.
2) Add pasta and cook for the length of time per the packet.
3) Just before draining, scoop out 1 cup of the pasta cooking water.
4) Drain pasta in a colander, leave it for a minute.
5) Transfer pasta to a bowl (do not use pasta cooking pot, too hot).
6) Add pesto and 1/4 cup of pasta water. Toss to coat the pasta in pesto, adding more water if required to make pasta silky and saucy, rather than dry and sticky.
7) Taste; add more salt and pepper if desired.
8) Serve immediately, garnished with fresh parmesan.
Enjoy

All about Lemons

All about Lemons

Lemon juice, like many fruit juices, is acidic. The Fact is, when we drink it, it can cause enamel erosion on our teeth. Lemon juice has a pH level of 2-3 which means it is causing harm to our teeth because liquids with a pH level under four have been proven to impact our dental health negatively.

How can I drink lemon water without damaging my teeth?

It’s possible to reap the benefits of lemon water while reducing the risk of damage to your teeth. We recommend:

  • Mix the lemon juice in 250ml of warm water to help to lessen the acidity.
  • You can further reduce risk by drinking lemon water through a straw. Using a straw allows the fluid to bypass the teeth.
  • After drinking the acidic lemon water, rinse your mouth with water straight away. This removes any acid that may remain on the tooth surface and reduces the acidity of the oral saliva.
  • Chew sugar-free gum after drinking the lemon water. This helps you produce more saliva, which helps neutralise the acidity in your mouth.
  • Do not brush your teeth for at least 30 minutes after drinking the lemon water.
  • Use a soft toothbrush and fluoridated toothpaste (fluoride toughens your enamel), and do not brush aggressively. Acid softens the enamel and makes it more prone to erosion during brushing.

Energy drinks are like battery acid.

Worse than Drinking Battery Acid

Just how horrible are these drinks for you? Here is a diagram showing the acid pH levels and teaspoons of sugar found in commonly enjoyed beverages:

Drink or Substance (12 oz. serving) Acid pH Tsp. Sugar
Water 7.0 (neutral) 0
Milk 6.7 1
Barq’s Root Beer 4 11
Minute Maid® Orange Juice 3.8 9
Propel® Fitness Water 3.4 1
Red Bull® Energy Drink 3.3 10
Sprite® 3.3 10
Mountain Dew 3.3 12
Diet Coke 3.1 0
Sierra Mist 3.1 10
Full Throttle Energy Drink 3 11
Diet Pepsi 3 0
Gatorade® 2.9 5
Sunkist® Orange Soda 2.9 13
Dr. Pepper 2.9 10
Vault™ Energy Soda 2.9 12
Mountain Dew AMP 2.8 11
SoBe Energy Citrus 2.6 12
Minute Maid® Lemonade 2.6 10
Pepsi 2.5 11
Diet Schweppes Tonic Water 2.5 0
Coca-Cola 2.4 10
Battery Acid 1 0

Notice at the bottom of the list is battery acid. Battery acid of course is not a drink, and it should never be consumed. But according to the chart, your teeth could better fight off highly destructive battery acid than some of the drinks you have every day. An eye-opener, this should help you consider your beverage consumption more seriously.

Acid and Sugar: A Vicious Combo

Acid and sugar are a two punch combination for tooth decay, erosion and infection. Acid breaks down our sensitive tooth enamel and can bore into our teeth’s crevices, causing cavities. Teeth exposed by acidic erosion are an open cesspool of bacteria that can lead to infections and extraction of teeth. Sugar, most actively sucrose, develops into plaque almost instantly once in contact with your teeth. Plaque buildup is not only unbecoming, but it is where bacteria sits and festers in your mouth. Your dental health depends on avoiding drinking acidic and sugary drinks.

Gold Silver Bronz Smile

7x Gold, 6x Silver, 7x Bronz, 20x Smile, well done, Team NZ

The New Zealand team (212 athletes, 112 men and 100 women, across twenty-one sports) collected a total of 20 medals, seven gold, six silver and seven bronze. Well done:-) Rowing led the sports with five medals, followed by canoeing with three medals, two medals in each of rugby sevens, cycling and athletics, and one medal in each of sailing, golf, boxing, trampolining, tennis and triathlon. It was the first time New Zealand won medals in trampolining (and gymnastics overall) and tennis.

Sprint canoeist Lisa Carrington won gold medals in the women’s K-1 200 metres, K-1 500 metres and with Caitlin Regal in the K-2 500 metres to become New Zealand’s most successful Olympian with six medals in all, including five gold medals. Rower Emma Twigg claimed the gold medal in the women’s single sculls after finishing fourth in the previous two games. The men’s rowing eight claimed the gold medal for the first time since 1972, with Hamish Bond becoming the first New Zealander to win a gold medal at three successive Olympics. Rowing pair Kerri Gowler and Grace Prendergast won the gold medal in the women’s pair before helping the women’s-eight win the silver medal. The women’s rugby sevens team beat France 26–12 to claim the gold medal.

We bring superheroes to smile.

Your smile can change the world.

Use your smile to change the world;

don’t let the world change your smile.”

5 Ways a Smile Can Change the World

Can a smile change the world?

Yes. And it begins with you. People change the world.

Here’s what smiling does for you.

1. Relieves Stress

Each time you smile, you activate and release feel-good neurotransmitters that relax your body, lowers stress, and can even lower heart rate and blood pressure. These neurotransmitters; dopamine, endorphins, and serotonin, are then released into your body. The endorphins act as a natural pain reliever, and the serotonin lifts your mood.

2. Changes Perceptions

Smiles are not only beautiful; they create joy. Studies show the act of smiling changes the way we perceive the world. “Pretend you are happy, and you will feel happy, pretend that you are angry, and you will feel angry,” concludes one study. Feelings of joy are a consequence of behaviour, they say. “We feel happy because we smile.”
And when our perception changes, our responses to others also change.
“Psychologists at the University of Sussex in England reported that when we smile, we see other people’s frowns as less severe and that when we frown, we see their smiling faces as less happy,” reports New York Magazine.

3. Creates Influencers

When you smile, people treat you differently. You’re viewed as attractive, reliable, relaxed and sincere.

A study published in the journal Neuropsychologia reported that seeing an attractive smiling face makes the recipient of that smile feel rewarded.

Researchers at the Face Research Laboratory at the University of Aberdeen, Scotland, rated smiles and attractiveness. Predictably, they found people were attracted to others who made eye contact and smiled more than those who did not.

When you smile, you become an influencer. But did you know that your smile is contagious?

“In a Swedish study, subjects were shown pictures of several emotions: joy, anger, fear and surprise. When the picture of someone smiling was presented, the researchers asked the subjects to frown. Instead, they found that the facial expressions went directly to imitation of what subjects saw. It took a conscious effort to turn that smile upside down. So if you’re smiling at someone, it’s likely they can’t help but smile back,” reports Psychology Today.

4. Contributes to Happiness

“Happiness is about being able to make the most of the good times – but also to cope effectively with the inevitable bad times,” says Mark Williamson for The Guardian.

• Warwick University found those who were influenced to feel happy (see #3 above) were 11% more productive than their peers.

• Warton Business School found companies with “happy” employees outperformed others on the stock market.

• Young adults who are happy earn more money than peers.

• Doctors who are happy make faster and more accurate diagnoses.

• Children who are happy perform better academically and are more creative.

5. Happiness is Contagious

Smiling leads to happiness. And happiness, studies show, increase your productivity, which creates a positive contribution to society.

Studies show one who is happy is more likely to vote, volunteer, participate in the community and respect law and order.

“There is even evidence that happiness is contagious so that happier people help others around them to become happier too. For example, an extensive study in the British Medical Journal followed people over 20 years and found that their happiness affected others in their networks across ‘three degrees of separation. In other words, how happy we are has a measurable impact on the mood of our friend’s friend’s friend,” says Williamson.

Warning: Energy Drinks Affect

Warning: Energy Drinks Affect Your Child’s Oral Health!

All energy drinks, even the sugar-free ones, contain an incredibly low pH level, which means they are highly acidic, almost as acidic as battery acid. That softens the tooth enamel, leaving your child’s teeth highly vulnerable to decay, cavities, and even tooth rot.

Sugar: Constant exposure to sugar in energy drinks provides cavity-causing bacteria with an abundant food source. As a result, they feast, bacteria produce acids that attack and weaken the tooth enamel’s outermost layer. That is the first stage in cavity development, which, if left untreated, can continue to progress.

Don’t let your teeth get wings.

Protect your teeth during contact sports. Always wear a mouthguard. It will protect your teeth/lips and prevent you from biting yourself during strenuous sports like rugby, football, basketball, hockey or boxing …!

Get your custom-fitted mouthguard and make it part of your team sports gear.

WILL BRACES AFFECT your SPORTS & EXERCISE?

Your braces won’t stop you from playing sports, but you’ll need to take some extra precautions during these activities.

.

Always wear a mouthguard. It is a rule you should follow, even if you don’t have braces, because it will protect your teeth.

.

Braces are made to fit comfortably in your mouth, but if you get hit with a ball or the shoulder of a teammate, they can do some serious damage, so the mouth guard is vital whenever you head out to play.

If your school is interested in participating in our mouthguard sponsorship program, please send us an email and discuss what we can do for you. dres.bachmann@gmail.com

Dental Golf Joke

Orthodontists and dentists are working in the same profession, but they have different ways to look at things.
.
First of all, an orthodontist is a dentist who undertakes an additional 2 to 3 years of university full-time training and studies in orthodontics. Only an orthodontist has the post-graduate training to practice orthodontics.
.
Only a specialist orthodontist has the experience and knowledge to deliver safe and effective treatment. Orthodontists dedicate their lives to continuously updating their knowledge in the field of orthodontics. This is why seeing an NZ registered specialist orthodontist for your orthodontic treatment will ensure you can have absolute confidence in the level of care you will receive.

Orthodontics is what they do best. In fact, it’s what they do all day, every day.
.
You don’t need a referral from your dentist or dental therapist to make an appointment with a specialist orthodontist.

The smiling man

L’uomo che sorride

(The smiling man)

The real power of man is the smile of the woman sitting next to him.

So everybody knows these guys …

Who’s got an amazing way with the ladies …

But for some reason – women keep on approaching him.

Why?

He has one simple weapon: a great smile.

People take smiling for granted these days – especially with all the fake million-dollar grins we see on TV shows, ads or flyers.

But there’s such a thing as an attractive, genuine smile

It lights up the room from a distance and captivates women.

Brush Your Teeth

Please, please, please,

(we can not say it often enough)

Brush Your Teeth.

The best Bachmannsmile lasts only as long as you keep your teeth healthy.

It is important to brush your teeth to prevent gum disease. Refusal to brush one’s teeth for several days can lead to the onset of gum disease. Brushing ensures the removal of plaque, which is the primary cause for tooth decay and gum disease; it also arrests the build-up of any plaque formation.

Tips on Proper Brushing

Dentists say that the minimum time you should spend brushing your teeth is 3 minutes twice a day. Here are some tips on how to brush properly:

  • Hold your brush at a 45-degree angle against your gumline. Gently brush from where the tooth and gum meet to the chewing surface in short (about half-a-tooth-wide) strokes. Brushing too hard can cause receding gums, tooth sensitivity, and, over time, loose teeth.
  • Use the same method to brush all outside and inside surfaces of your teeth.
  • To clean the chewing surfaces of your teeth, use short sweeping strokes, tipping the bristles into the pits and crevices.
  • To clean the inside surfaces of your top and bottom front teeth and gums, hold the brush almost vertical. With back and forth motions, bring the front part of the brush over the teeth and gums.
  • Using a forward-sweeping motion, gently brush your tongue and the roof of your mouth to remove the decay-causing bacteria that exist in these places.
  • Use an egg timer or play a favourite song while brushing your teeth to get used to brushing for a full 3 minutes. Some electronic toothbrushes have timers that let you know when 3 minutes are up.

.

Please, please, please, brush Your Teeth.
