In some cases, teeth do not erupt properly through the jawbone and gum tissue into the mouth. Maxillary canines (upper eye teeth) are the most commonly impacted after wisdom teeth. 

Impacted Canines

When a canine tooth is impacted or trapped beneath the gums, an expose & bond procedure is done to help the tooth emerge.

Impacted teeth may cause problems, including bone loss, root resorption, or formation of cysts or tumours. Bachmann Orthodontics and an Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeon work together with a combination of braces and minor surgical procedures, including tooth exposure & bonding of an orthodontic bracket to align the tooth with the other teeth properly.

What causes canine impaction?

Most teeth will come into their proper position, but an impacted tooth is not uncommon. Many times, a canine tooth becomes affected due to dental crowding or retained baby teeth.

However, it is important that your child sees their general dentist or orthodontist specialist regularly so that the growth and development of their teeth can be monitored. Your child’s dentist will be able to identify any issues and can refer you to the dental professionals who specialize in impacted teeth—your oral surgeon and orthodontist.

The most common treatment for impacted canines is a procedure called “expose & bond.”

How does the exposure and bonding treatment work?

Expose & bond treatment works by helping the impacted tooth move into the right position. However, first, Bachmann Orthodontics will create a space for the impacted tooth to come in by applying braces. The gentle but steady pressure on the teeth caused by the braces will shift the teeth into their new positions. After a space has been created for the tooth, an oral surgeon will expose the tooth with a minor surgical procedure. Once the tooth has been exposed, a bracket will be bonded to the tooth with a small golden chain attachment. Bachmann Orthodontics will use this golden chain to guide the tooth into place.

You can start orthodontic treatment while you still have some baby teeth.

Orthodontics can help correct your child’s bite before their adult teeth come in. The recommended age to visit an orthodontist is the age of seven. It is the ideal age for several reasons. 

First, it is beneficial to the orthodontist to see how the smile is shaping up with the mix of baby and permanent teeth. 

Second, Bachmann Orthodontics can monitor the eruption pattern of permanent teeth, jaw growth and development, and spot any issues that might become more serious as the permanent teeth begin to erupt.

In some cases, if we wait until all the baby teeth have fallen out, that may be too late to create an ideal smile most effectively. But on the other hand, treating patients while still having some baby teeth can create a perfect environment into which the permanent teeth can erupt. And often, this means later treatment is more effective and efficient.

The younger your child is, the more straightforward orthodontic treatment can be. The most important reason is that both the upper and lower jaws are still growing. This is giving us the chance to guide their development to ensure we can reduce crowding and help the permanent teeth erupt correctly.

In addition, we have many years of experience & training in assessing a child’s pace of oral development. Therefore, it is usually immediately evident to us what level of treatment will be required.

When we assess a child or young adult, we always consider what their teeth are likely to do between the time we first see them and when their treatment is expected to begin. As a result, we can more accurately estimate the best age for braces in their specific case. In addition, we constantly tailor our orthodontic treatment programs to each and their needs.

The New Zealand team (212 athletes, 112 men and 100 women, across twenty-one sports) collected a total of 20 medals, seven gold, six silver and seven bronze. Well done:-) Rowing led the sports with five medals, followed by canoeing with three medals, two medals in each of rugby sevens, cycling and athletics, and one medal in each of sailing, golf, boxing, trampolining, tennis and triathlon. It was the first time New Zealand won medals in trampolining (and gymnastics overall) and tennis.

Sprint canoeist Lisa Carrington won gold medals in the women’s K-1 200 metres, K-1 500 metres and with Caitlin Regal in the K-2 500 metres to become New Zealand’s most successful Olympian with six medals in all, including five gold medals. Rower Emma Twigg claimed the gold medal in the women’s single sculls after finishing fourth in the previous two games. The men’s rowing eight claimed the gold medal for the first time since 1972, with Hamish Bond becoming the first New Zealander to win a gold medal at three successive Olympics. Rowing pair Kerri Gowler and Grace Prendergast won the gold medal in the women’s pair before helping the women’s-eight win the silver medal. The women’s rugby sevens team beat France 26–12 to claim the gold medal.

What is the difference?
First of all, both are qualified dentists and have to work in their profession for a minimum of 3 years.

An orthodontist is a dentist who undertakes an additional 2 to 3 years of university fulltime training and studies in Orthodontics. Only an orthodontist has the post-graduate training to practice orthodontics.

The New Zealand Association of Orthodontists (NZAO) is a professional organisation dedicated to ensuring you receive high-quality specialist orthodontic care. Members of the NZAO must have a recognised post-graduate qualification in orthodontics and are required to undergo regular professional development to maintain standards.
Some dentists also provide orthodontic treatment for adults and children. They provide non-specialist orthodontic treatment and treat patients without knowledge of the full range of possible treatment options.

Only an orthodontist can offer a specialist diagnosis and see the full picture of treatment options.
