Look sharp, live smart

The link between smiling & happiness

Smiling is a universal sign of happiness. No matter what country you go to or what culture you take in, smiling is seen as a sign of happiness and acceptance. The main reason for that is because studies have shown that when a person is smiling, it actually affects specific muscles that can make that person feel happy. When you use these particular muscles, your brain will release endorphins, which are brain chemicals that induce feelings of pleasure and euphoria. Smiling truly does have the ability to make you happier.

The smiling man

L’uomo che sorride

(The smiling man)

The real power of man is the smile of the woman sitting next to him.

So everybody knows these guys …

Who’s got an amazing way with the ladies …

And you know what’s funny?

He’s not the tallest or most athletic guy … and doesn’t really dress as well as you do.

But for some reason – women keep on approaching him.

Why?

He has one simple weapon: a great smile.

People take smiling for granted these days – especially with all the fake million-dollar grins we see on TV shows, ads or flyers.

But there’s such a thing as an attractive, genuine smile

It lights up the room from a distance and captivates women.

A Smile That Attracts Women!

Why has chocolate hidden dangers?

Did you consume a lot of chocolate this Easter weekend?

Chocolate is a nice treat; however, be careful of hidden dangers.

  • Chocolate with fruit and nut: the nuts are too hard and may cause brackets to come off. The raisins are very sticky and will get stuck around your appliance.
  • Chocolate that contains caramel is very sticky and chewy and should be avoided.
  • Chocolate that contains nougat: Nougat gets stuck around your appliance.
  • Chocolate from the fridge is too hard to eat whilst wearing orthodontic appliances; ensure it is at room temperature before consuming.

However, we advise avoiding sugary foods while wearing braces. While wearing your braces, you will want to avoid foods that are extremely soft, chewy or sticky and that contain a large amount of sugar or starch. Foods that are safe and unsafe while you are wearing your braces.

  • Cake and pies
  • Energy drinks
  • Extremely soft bread
  • Fruit juices
  • Gum
  • Heavily processed foods
  • Ice cream
  • Fizzes
  • Sports drinks

And it is essential to brush your teeth 30 minutes after every meal.

This role will keep your teeth nice and healthy throughout orthodontic treatment.

Easter Bunny Smile

Many of us will be expecting a visit from the Easter bunny very soon and are looking forward to enjoying a few sweet treats and time with family and friends. During Easter, you want to enjoy the activities, but it’s essential to protect your dental health. With a bit of foresight, you can enjoy sweet treats without spoiling your smile.

However, foods to completely avoid with braces include:

  • popcorn
  • nuts
  • ice
  • chewing gum
  • hard candy
  • chewy candy
  • pizza crust
  • bagels and other hard rolls
  • crunchy vegetables and fruits
  • hard crackers
  • pretzels
  • chips

Whenever you eat something sugary, it feeds bacteria in your mouth, allowing them to produce acid that weakens and damages your tooth enamel, eventually causing cavities.

So, while the occasional sweet treat is OK, limit yourself to only a few sugary foods and beverages a week.

Above all, make sure you take the time to brush your teeth thoroughly twice daily or more frequently as possible and floss at least once each day.

What can we do to make you smile?

Enjoy your long Happy Easter Weekend

Our friendly and highly professional orthodontics team is happy to work for you.

We bring superheroes to smile.

Your smile can change the world.

Use your smile to change the world;

don’t let the world change your smile.”

5 Ways a Smile Can Change the World

Can a smile change the world?

Yes. And it begins with you. People change the world.

Here’s what smiling does for you.

1. Relieves Stress

Each time you smile, you activate and release feel-good neurotransmitters that relax your body, lowers stress, and can even lower heart rate and blood pressure. These neurotransmitters; dopamine, endorphins, and serotonin, are then released into your body. The endorphins act as a natural pain reliever, and the serotonin lifts your mood.

2. Changes Perceptions

Smiles are not only beautiful, they create joy. Studies show the act of smiling changes the way we perceive the world. “Pretend you are happy, and you will feel happy, pretend that you are angry, and you will feel angry,” concludes one study. Feelings of joy are a consequence of behavior, they say. “We feel happy because we smile.”

And when our perception changes, our responses to others also change.

“Psychologists at the University of Sussex in England reported that when we smile, we see other people’s frowns as less severe and that when we frown we see their smiling faces as less happy,” reports New York Magazine.

3. Creates Influencers

When you smile, people treat you differently. You’re viewed as attractive, reliable, relaxed and sincere.

A study published in the journal Neuropsychologia reported that seeing an attractive smiling face makes the recipient of that smile feel rewarded.

Researchers at the Face Research Laboratory at the University of Aberdeen, Scotland, rated smiles and attractiveness. Predictably, they found people were attracted to others who made eye contact and smiled more than those who did not.

When you smile, you become an influencer. Did you know that your smile is actually contagious?

“In a Swedish study, subjects were shown pictures of several emotions: joy, anger, fear and surprise. When the picture of someone smiling was presented, the researchers asked the subjects to frown. Instead, they found that the facial expressions went directly to imitation of what subjects saw. It took conscious effort to turn that smile upside down. So if you’re smiling at someone, it’s likely they can’t help but smile back,” reports Psychology Today.

4. Contributes to Happiness

“Happiness is about being able to make the most of the good times – but also to cope effectively with the inevitable bad times,” says Mark Williamson for The Guardian.

• Warwick University found those who were influenced to feel happy (see #3 above) were 11% more productive than their peers.

• Warton Business School found companies with “happy” employees outperformed others on the stock market.

• Young adults who are happy earn more money than peers.

• Doctors who are happy make faster and more accurate diagnoses.

• Children who are happy perform better academically and are more creative.

5. Happiness is Contagious

Smiling leads to happiness. And happiness, studies show, increases your productivity, which in turn, creates a positive contribution to society.

Studies show one who is happy is more likely to vote, volunteer, participate in community, and respect law and order.

“There is even evidence that happiness is contagious so that happier people help others around them to become happier too. An extensive study in the British Medical Journal followed people over 20 years and found that their happiness affected others in their networks across ‘three degrees of separation’. In other words, how happy we are has a measurable impact on the mood of our friend’s friend’s friend,” says Williamson.

Can I drink tea with braces?

A common question in the orthodontics community is whether or not you have to give up tea, coffee and other hot beverages or food items such as soup. The short answer to this question is no; you typically do not have to give up coffee, tea, or soup when you have braces. You do, however, need to make sure that you exercise proper care of your orthodontic appliance. Whether you have Invisalign, ceramic braces or traditional metal braces
Tea can help fight the bacteria found on teeth due to the compounds called polyphenols they are made of. The best way to drink tea while wearing braces is to drink it as is – no sugar or honey added. For those who prefer a sweeter taste, use sugar-free sweeteners instead.

We are proud to be the official sponsor of the @RangitotoCollege www.rangitoto.school.nz Mouthguard programme and also happy to announce that @Benefitz www.benefitz.co.nz took our Bachmann Orthodontics signage in place at the Rangitoto College Hockey Turf.
We love beautiful smiles.

Protect your teeth during contact sports. Always wear a mouth guard, it will protect your teeth/lips and prevent you from biting yourself during strenuous sports like rugby, football, basketball, hockey or boxing.
Get your custom-fitted mouthguard and make it part of your team sports gear.
.
WILL BRACES AFFECT your SPORTS & EXERCISE?
Your braces won’t stop you from playing sports, but you’ll need to take some extra precautions during these activities.
.
Always wear a mouthguard. It is a rule you should follow even if you don’t have braces because it will protect your teeth.
.
Braces are made to fit comfortably in your mouth, but if you get hit with a ball or the shoulder of a teammate, they can do some serious damage, so the mouth guard is vital whenever you head out to play.
If your school is interested in taking part in our mouthguard sponsorship program feel free to send us an email and we can discuss what we can do for you. dres.bachmann@gmail.com

An orthodontist is a dentist who undertakes an additional 2 to 3 years of university fulltime training and studies in Orthodontics. Only an orthodontist can offer a specialist diagnosis and see the full picture of treatment options.

look sharp and have a sharper look

Some things look good from the first sight, but what is if you dig deeper, and have a look under the surface.

Can the job still be done correctly?

Is the functionality given?

Does it last forever?

It will be best if a specialist does the job.

Especially when it comes to your personal or your loved one’s oral healthcare, you want to make sure that you’ll get the best professional help in achieving the perfect smile. How can I make sure that I am in good hands? First of all, go to a specialist orthodontist and NOT to someone who has a special interest in orthodontics. But what is the difference between a dentist with special interests and a specialist orthodontist?

While dentists and orthodontists have a lot in common, specialisation is what sets an orthodontist apart.

What is an orthodontist?

Think of it as the difference between a painter and an artist. Your family’s general dentist will be able to help you to improve your overall oral health. A specialist orthodontist is the only professionally qualified person to diagnose, prevent and treat dental or facial irregularities, and correctly align your teeth, bite and jaws.

As well as completing a five-year degree in dentistry, an orthodontist also undergoes a further 5,000 hours of specialist training in the field of orthodontics. Whether you or your child has treatment with braces or clear aligners such as Invisalign®, you need to be sure you’re being treated by an orthodontist to get the best results.

Specialist Orthodontist

See a little difference?

It is the same as between a specialist Orthodontist and having a special interest in orthodontics.
Why choose a specialist orthodontist?

The answer is straightforward.
Only specialist orthodontists have a minimum of 5000 hours of training, three years of postgraduate doctoral training. That’s on top of 5 years of dental school and practising as a dentist for two years.
That is why we can guarantee the result of our work.

Problems to watch for in children age 6 to 8

The Association of Orthodontists recommends that children should be evaluated by the time they are age 7.

However, some circumstances may require earlier intervention, such as:

– Excessive overcrowding of teeth

– Open bites: when the upper and lower front teeth fail
to meet

– Overbites: when the upper teeth protrude past the
lower teeth

– Underbites: when the lower teeth protrude past the
upper teeth

– Crossbites: when teeth in the lower jaw overlap teeth
in the upper jaw

.
Recommended and possible treatments:
.
Phase I Treatment
(intervention treatment) 6 to 10 years old.
Starts before all the permanent teeth come through.
This treatment is usually recommended to make more space for developing teeth and correct oral problems, such as overbites and crossbites.
Phase I treatment often involves limited dental hardware, such as expanders and partial braces.
.
Phase II Treatment
(comprehensive treatment) Age 11 to 13.
When all their permanent teeth have come through.
This treatment usually involves full braces.
.
Whether your child will need phase I or II treatment will depend on the position of their teeth and jaw development.
The benefits of early examinations:
Having your children examined earlier (before age 7) has numerous benefits, including:
– Oral problems can be identified earlier
– tooth extraction can be avoided since more space can
be created
-Long-term treatment can be appropriately determined
and treatment time can be shortened
.
Make an appointment today and find out what will be the best treatment plan for your child to become perfect Bachmannsmile.

new smiles welcome

“A smile is the universal welcome.” – Max Eastman

Smiling is a universal sign of happiness. The main reason for that is because studies have shown that when a person is smiling, it affects specific muscles that can make that person feel happy. When you use these specific muscles, your brain will release endorphins, which are brain chemicals that will induce feelings of pleasure and euphoria. Smiling does have the ability to make you happier!

There is always the right time for a Bachmannsmile.
