Smiling makes you look prettier.

Interdental cleaning before brushing
New research has shown that interdental cleaning before brushing is the best way to clean our teeth effectively. The study found that flossing loosens bacteria and food debris from between the teeth. This allows brushing to be much more successful at removing plaque.
Brushing your teeth twice a day with fluoride toothpaste is essential for a good oral health routine. However, the study shows that interdental cleaning also has a big part to play in keeping our teeth and gums healthy.
Brushing alone only cleans three of the five surfaces of our teeth. Cleaning between them before we pick up our toothbrush is hugely beneficial. Especially when you have braces or aligners, it helps prevent gum disease by removing plaque from areas the toothbrush alone cannot reach.
It is a myth that having a good oral health routine begins and ends with brushing our teeth twice a day.
The importance of looking after the health of our teeth and gums by cleaning interdentally and then brushing cannot be stressed enough. Doing this alongside maintaining a balanced, low-in-sugar diet and regularly visiting the dentist. This will make us far less likely to encounter problems with our oral health.”

Impacted Canines
Sometimes a golden chain is needed to help the upper eye teeth or the wisdom teeth to get in place.
In some cases, teeth do not erupt properly through the jawbone and gum tissue into the mouth. Maxillary canines (upper eye teeth) are the most commonly impacted after wisdom teeth.
Impacted Canines
When a canine tooth is impacted or trapped beneath the gums, an expose & bond procedure is done to help the tooth emerge.
Impacted teeth may cause problems, including bone loss, root resorption, or formation of cysts or tumours. Bachmann Orthodontics and an Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeon work together with a combination of braces and minor surgical procedures, including tooth exposure & bonding of an orthodontic bracket to align the tooth with the other teeth properly.
What causes canine impaction?
Most teeth will come into their proper position, but an impacted tooth is not uncommon. Many times, a canine tooth becomes affected due to dental crowding or retained baby teeth.
However, it is important that your child sees their general dentist or orthodontist specialist regularly so that the growth and development of their teeth can be monitored. Your child’s dentist will be able to identify any issues and can refer you to the dental professionals who specialize in impacted teeth—your oral surgeon and orthodontist.
The most common treatment for impacted canines is a procedure called “expose & bond.”
How does the exposure and bonding treatment work?
Expose & bond treatment works by helping the impacted tooth move into the right position. However, first, Bachmann Orthodontics will create a space for the impacted tooth to come in by applying braces. The gentle but steady pressure on the teeth caused by the braces will shift the teeth into their new positions. After a space has been created for the tooth, an oral surgeon will expose the tooth with a minor surgical procedure. Once the tooth has been exposed, a bracket will be bonded to the tooth with a small golden chain attachment. Bachmann Orthodontics will use this golden chain to guide the tooth into place.
Bachmann Orthodontics welcomes patients of all ages to their practice.
If your child has an impacted tooth, we encourage you to contact us to schedule a consultation and receive your personalized treatment plan.
Do I have to brush my retainer?
You would never consider going days without brushing your teeth. However, many retainer wearers go for long periods without cleaning these devices.
The same bacteria that build up on teeth can grow on a retainer. As a result, putting an unclean retainer in your mouth is like applying a bacteria and plaque-laden solution to the teeth and gums.
How to clean your retainer?
When brushing teeth, people should brush their retainer as well.
It is best to use a soft-bristled toothbrush and non-whitening toothpaste. Afterwards, remove the retainer and rinse it thoroughly. People should brush their teeth again after removing the retainer to clean any areas covered by it.

The hidden secret of the chocolate Easter bunnies.
Happy Easter.
We wish you a great holiday break.
However, a chocolate Easter bunny is a nice treat; however, be careful of hidden dangers.
Chocolate with fruit and nut: the nuts are too hard and may cause brackets to come off. The raisins are very sticky and will get stuck around your appliance.
Chocolate that contains caramel is very sticky and chewy and should be avoided.
Chocolate that contains nougat: Nougat gets stuck around your appliance.
Chocolate from the fridge is too hard to eat whilst wearing orthodontic appliances; ensure it is at room temperature before consuming.
However, we advise avoiding sugary foods while wearing braces. While wearing your braces, you will want to avoid extremely soft, chewy or sticky foods that contain a large amount of sugar or starch. Foods that are safe and unsafe while you are wearing your braces.
Cake and pies
Energy drinks
Extremely soft bread
Fruit juices
Gum
Heavily processed foods
Ice cream
Fizzes
Sports drinks
And it is essential to brush your teeth 30 minutes after every meal.
This role will keep your teeth nice and healthy throughout orthodontic treatment.

Orthodontic Auxillary Training Program
Last week we hosted the final assessment of the “OATP” Orthodontic Auxillary Training Program from Otago University.
All students have passed the two-day final examination and are now certified OAs. Congratulations and a big smile. Special thanks to the volunteering Specialist Orthodontists and our staff. Tony, it was fantastic to have you in our practice and thank you so much for your lovely email.
We are happy that we could make you smile.
“Hi, Claudia,
Thank you so much for having the OATP final assessment at your practice.”
“I know how disruptive it is, especially as you are so busy, short-staffed, and we are all dealing with the Covid craziness!”
“I have been involved with many OATP final assessments, and this was the most well organised, most well run, and smoothest I have been to. It is a credit to yourself and your staff. Special mention to Jaz, who was just amazing!”
“Thank you again; I hope we can actually get to catch up at a conference etc., again soon”.
Cheers – Tony

Tooth enamel is hard as diamonds
After diamonds, tooth enamel is the second hardest compound in the world.
The hardest substance in the body is tooth enamel, your teeth’s natural defence system. The only naturally occurring substance harder than tooth enamel is diamond. Tooth enamel is the hard white substance covering the crown of a tooth.
Unfortunately, tooth enamel can wear away over time.
Acids also temporarily soften your tooth every time you eat or drink, making it vulnerable. Luckily, your saliva contains compounds that re-strengthen tooth enamel soon after this occurs. However, all mouth components work together, and therefore you need regular check-ups to make sure that everything is functioning correctly.
Not only does tooth enamel protect your teeth, but it also controls how temperature is sensed in the internal nerve of each tooth.

orthodontic treatment with baby teeth
You can start orthodontic treatment while you still have some baby teeth.
Orthodontics can help correct your child’s bite before their adult teeth come in. The recommended age to visit an orthodontist is the age of seven. It is the ideal age for several reasons.
First, it is beneficial to the orthodontist to see how the smile is shaping up with the mix of baby and permanent teeth.
Second, Bachmann Orthodontics can monitor the eruption pattern of permanent teeth, jaw growth and development, and spot any issues that might become more serious as the permanent teeth begin to erupt.
In some cases, if we wait until all the baby teeth have fallen out, that may be too late to create an ideal smile most effectively. But on the other hand, treating patients while still having some baby teeth can create a perfect environment into which the permanent teeth can erupt. And often, this means later treatment is more effective and efficient.
The younger your child is, the more straightforward orthodontic treatment can be. The most important reason is that both the upper and lower jaws are still growing. This is giving us the chance to guide their development to ensure we can reduce crowding and help the permanent teeth erupt correctly.
Free monitoring program
We have implemented a free, regular oral development monitoring program for your child to ensure we begin their treatment at the best time possible. In addition, we have many years of experience & training in assessing a child’s pace of oral development. Therefore, it is usually immediately evident to us what level of treatment will be required.
When we assess a child or young adult, we always consider what their teeth are likely to do between the time we first see them and when their treatment is expected to begin. As a result, we can more accurately estimate the best age for braces in their specific case. In addition, we constantly tailor our orthodontic treatment programs to each and their needs.

Energy drink
Energy Drinks Affect Your Child’s Oral Health!
All energy drinks, even the sugar-free ones, contain an incredibly low pH level, which means they are highly acidic, almost as acidic as battery acid. That softens the tooth enamel, leaving your child’s teeth highly vulnerable to decay, cavities, and even tooth rot.
.
Sugar: Constant exposure to sugar in energy drinks provides cavity-causing bacteria with an abundant food source. As they feast, bacteria produce acids that attack and weaken the tooth enamel’s outermost layer. That is the first stage in cavity development, which, if left untreated, can continue to progress. So don’t let your teeth get wings.

International Women’s Day
International Women’s Day (IWD) is celebrated annually on 8 March to commemorate women’s cultural, political, and socioeconomic achievements.
It is also a focal point in the women’s rights movement, bringing attention to issues such as: Gender Equality,Reproductive Rights, and Violence & Abuse Against Women.
Spurred on by the universal female suffrage movement that had begun in New Zealand, IWD originated from labour movements in North America and Europe during the early 20th century.
.
The theme for International Women’s Day, 8 March 2022 (IWD 2022), recognises the contribution of women and girls worldwide, who are leading the charge on climate change adaptation, mitigation, and response, building a more sustainable future for all.
What can we do to make you smile?
Advancing gender equality in the context of the climate crisis and disaster risk reduction is one of the greatest global challenges of the 21st century.
The issues of climate change and sustainability have had and will continue to have severe and lasting impacts on our environment, economic and social development.
Women are increasingly being recognised as more vulnerable to climate change impacts than men. This is because they constitute the majority of the worlds poor and are more dependent on the natural resources that climate change threatens the most.
Eating with braces!
What can you eat when you first get braces?
Getting braces doesn’t hurt, but your mouth may be sensitive in the days following your appointment. Therefore, eating foods that have a tougher texture could cause pain.
Since you’ll also have to learn how to chew differently, your orthodontist will likely recommend only eating soft foods for the first few days.
Ideal foods to eat after getting braces include:
- mashed potatoes
- yogurt
- soups
- scrambled eggs
- oatmeal
- grains
- seafood
- soft fruits
- soft cheeses
- cooked or soft vegetables
- moist desserts
- pasta
Basically, anything that’s easy to chew.
What to keep avoiding while you have braces
Be mindful that braces are sensitive to damage, so you’ll need to avoid certain foods for as long as you have braces.
These include sticky and hard foods that can damage the wires or bands or cause a bracket to separate from a tooth.
Foods to completely avoid with braces include:
- popcorn
- nuts
- ice
- chewing gum
- hard candy
- chewy candy
- pizza crust
- bagels and other hard rolls
- crunchy vegetables and fruits
- hard crackers
- pretzels
- chips
Also, limit consumption of sugary foods and drinks while having braces. When sugar mixes with saliva, it creates a sticky film (plaque) that coats the teeth.
Brushing can remove plaque, but that becomes harder to do with braces. And if you’re unable to remove this sticky film, there’s a risk of tooth decay.
